Cockroaches

With moving season underway, nothing is more unsettling than discovering these insects in your new home — an unwelcome “gift” often left behind by previous occupants!

IDENTIFICATION & LIFESTYLE

The cockroach, also known as a roach, typically measures between 1.3 and 1.6 cm (½ to 5/8 inch). It is light brown to tan in color, with two dark parallel lines running from the head to the base of its wings. Although cockroaches have wings, they are unable to fly.

Cockroaches thrive in any environment where they have access to food, water, and shelter. They are commonly found in buildings due to the warm, humid conditions provided by kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and plumbing systems. Their presence does not necessarily indicate poor hygiene.

Cockroaches and their eggs can enter a home through various items such as used furniture, food products, empty beer or soda bottles, and moving boxes.

Once inside, cockroaches spread easily throughout a building. Since they are primarily active at night, infestations may go unnoticed for some time. They are attracted to foods containing starch, sugar, and protein, but when food is scarce, they will eat almost anything.

HOW TO GET RID OF THEM

Thorough cleaning is essential… along with treatment by a professional from the Regional Institute (IRCAE), who will use bait-based methods that are safe for occupants.

These professional-grade products are unfortunately not available to consumers but provide effective results within weeks following treatment. 

While household insecticides can offer some level of control, they are often not sufficient to completely eliminate an infestation.
